Az ütő- vagy tekenyőgardon a csíki székelyek és gyimesi csángók ősi húros hangszere.
Bükk-, juhar- vagy fűzfából kivésett tekenőből s ennek öble fölé feszített 3-4 húrból áll.
A hangszer monoton hangja a tánc ütemét adja. Kizárólag tánckíséretre használják. Általában egy házaspár egyik tagja játszik rajta, míg a társa hegedűn kíséri.
A gardonpálcát nem húzogatják a húrokon, hanem ütik vele őket, miközben a húrokat a másik kézzel felcsippentik és elengedik.
The gardon is an ancient stringed instrument used by the Szekelys of Csik and the Csangos of Gyimes.
It is made out of beech, maple or willow. Its shape resembles a trough, on top of which 3-4 strings are stretched.
With this instrument the musician plays a monotone rhythm. The gardon is beaten with a stick for supplying rhythm for the dance music. The instrument is only used for this purpose. Usually, a couple provides the dance music. One of them plays the gardon, while the other accompanies on the violin.
The stick is not drawn over the strings but it is used to beat them while they are pinched and then released by the other hand.
